Zoning with Automatic Dampers

Zoning with automated dampers

Ever wake up on a Summer night frigidly cold while the kids are complaining that their bedrooms aren’t cold enough? Or you find yourself breaking a sweat just sitting on the couch in your den,  but the kitchen feels like a skating rink? No need to continue to suffer: there’s a fix for that! They are called Automatic Dampers.  You’re welcome!

But why use an automatic damper?  Let’s say you keep your house at 72 degrees, but one or two rooms are significantly warmer, but you can’t cool them without freezing the rest of the house.  With automatic dampers you would be able to redirect cooler/warmer air to those rooms while keeping specific rooms at their optimal temperature.  The concept is called zoning.

Automatic dampers come in two types: duct dampers and smart vents, but they essentially work the same. They constantly regulate airflow and are controlled by thermostats in each zone (each room or area). They work equally well for cooled air from your AC and warm air from your furnace. So you’ll find they keep living spaces much more comfortable and usable year round. Not to mention, you may find that you save some money since you aren’t over heating or over cooling any of your zones – and you can even set the thermostat at a very frugal temperature in spaces you don’t use as often!
