Is Your HVAC System Ready For Summer?

The unofficial start to summer is here in Kansas City, and with it, rising temperatures! You want your HVAC system running as effectively and efficiently as possible. So what can you can do to make sure you’re cool as a cucumber this summer? Here are the top 5 things you can do now, to keep your home an oasis!

  1. Change The Air Filters:  It’s said time and again, but it bears repeating! Hopefully you are already in the habit of changing your filters every 1 to 3 months, but the end of Spring is a great time to make sure you haven’t fallen behind in this task. A lot of dust accumulates during the winter, and you absolutely want clean filters before you start using the air conditioning. Also make sure you are using the right filters and have replaced them in the correct position with airflow arrows pointing in the same direction.
  2. Remove Condenser Covers:  Not everyone uses a cover, but it can be a smart idea to protect the units from winter weather. Be sure to remove them before turning on the AC as it can damage the system if it is covered. You may also want to remove any debris or vegetation that has grown up or accumulated around the unit. Condenser coils transfer heat, so this stuff can really disrupt the process!
  3. Clean Registers And Supply Vents:  Clean filters won’t help as much if your registers and supply vents are full of dust or pet hair! Vacuum them well, in case they got overlooked in your spring cleaning. If they have covers, due to having a zoned system with unused AC vents in the winter, you’ll want to remove those before starting up your system.
  4. Clean Condensation Lines:  As condensation builds in your air conditioner, the pipe that carries it away can get clogged. If you don’t catch it before it happens, it could back up into either the air conditioner or your house! Neither of those is a good option and would end in an awful mess and big repair bill! Locate where the pipe drains out, and check for any clogs, before this becomes a problem.
  5. Schedule Your HVAC System Maintenance:  The best bet for keeping your air conditioner running at peak performance, is to have an annual maintenance visit with a professional HVAC technician. They will perform a multipoint inspection that will identify small problems before they become big headaches.
